Lesson Six

Opening bid of 2 clubs

This is absolutely forcing to game with one exception only – and that is when the 2 club opener rebids 2 notrumps after a 2 diamond (weakness) response.  In that case the responder can pass if holding less than 2 points.  The 2 NT rebid promises 23 or 24 points  and a balanced hand.  With 25-26 points, opener would jump to 3 NT.

If the opener rebids a suit, responder must keep the bidding open until game is reached.

If opener rebids a suit after 2C – 2D responder can raise it with 3 card support as the rebid promises at least a 5 card suit.

If you play Stayman and transfers over a 2NT opener you can do the same after 2C – 2D – 2NT if you wish.  (treating it as a 2NT opener but a bit stronger) but make sure partner has agreed beforehand!

If partner opens 2 clubs and you have a useful hand (usually 7 points or more) you can make a positive response.  If you bid a suit it promises 5 cards and at least 1 of the top three honours.  If you are balanced you can bid 2 NT.  If you make a positive response there is a good chance a slam is on if you can find a fit as you will have at least 30 points between the hands

Acol 2 Bids.

If partner opens with an ACOL 2 bid showing an 8 playing trick hand and you hold 2 aces or an ace and 2 kings plus a fit for his suit you should investigate a slam.

Rebid of new Suit

IIf partner opens 1 of a suit and then rebids another suit he is promising 5 cards in the first bid suit (unless both are bid at the 1 level)   If you have 10 or 11 points and three of his first suit you should jump a level in that suit.  For example partner opens 1 heart, you bid 1 spade and he rebids 2 clubs.  With:

sQ854
Heart
J76
dA943
c K4

Jump to 3 hearts.   This is not forcing but invites game if partner is better than a minimum.
