Opening Leads – in priority order
If partner has bid a suit – LEAD IT ! (Most of the time)
As a general principle:
- Try to avoid giving away an unnecessary trick.
- Try to establish winners.
Against a suit contract:
- Lead Ace from AK
- Top of a high sequence (eg. KQJx, QJ10x)
- If declarer has shown 2 suits – lead a trump (but not a singleton) unless you hold the King or Queen
- 4th highest from an honour in an unbid suit
- Singleton if you want to ruff (avoid if trumps are breaking badly for declarer)
- Doubleton
Against Notrumps
- Partner’s suit (usually a safe lead, and can’t be criticised by partner)
- Top of sequence ( eg. KQJx, QJ10x)
- 4th from an honour (trying to establish the suit )
- middle from 3 small (on second round of this suit play higher one)
- The unbid suit (usually a safe lead)
- Avoid leading a suit bid by declarer{you may need to lead a short suit if you have length in the opponents’ suit} – unless your holding is almost solid
